Whose Father Was He?

I have been riveted by Errol Morris's blog - the five installments about Amos Humiston, Civil War soldier who died holding an ambrotype of his children; the man who found it; what happened after; and how the story is being told now. Start with part one! The juiciest bits come from the post-war orphanage.

From a letter to his wife during the war:

January 2, 1863: “If I ever live to get home you will not complain of being lonesome again or of sleeping cold for I will lay as close to you as the bark to a tree.”

It's Not Red, But...

Our department does a grab-bag sort of exchange at the holiday party: you buy something for under $10, put it in the box, then pick out something in exchange. I opened this stapler... turned red... I blame the box and my ignorance. I didn't get it at first, but now I have a special relationship with my stapler. Turns out it was put in by one of our technicians, who really loves staplers. A lot. Evidence: blog.

My People Part Un

First, let's pretend I took a good digital image. Okay, good.

Last year, I mentioned a very awesome Christmas present, from my parents. This year, this little treat came my way (along with many other goodies, including an egg-shaped ornament decorated with an image of Winterthur!). Um, helloooooo. Who has the best parents ever? I'm going to let you ruminate.

As I've mentioned before, my mother is an art librarian. I happen to find her a wonderful resource, and I hope her graduate students agree. Not too long ago, I have a feeling she played a tiny part in the hire of a young dude who is a breath of fresh air to the library. And I'm sure, another of her surrogate children. They have been busy getting with the times over in Cleveland. Not only do they have a blog, but they also have a special section of the website called "Collection in Focus." Check out this one on Lalique, written by Mrs. Mom herself.

In dad news, the new book project is almost finished. I have a feeling this one is going to be a big seller in Brooklyn. You know, my father and I might be the most annoying pair... bragging about each other to grocery store clerks and other unsuspecting citizens. Whatevs. Hugs to all!

Future Blog of Note

As I sip my coffee this morning, I am proud to announce a new blog by my sometimes partner in crime. I also hope, that along with its birth, this blog will get a little jolt (i.e. I will actually write a post).

Looking forward to it, and looking forward to getting one or two readers back.

This is not about design: Google Analytics

My friend Brian told me about Google Analytics a few days ago, and it is SO cool. It tells me how many people are viewing my blog, exactly what city they are viewing from, and all these other stats. Did you click on any type of link to get here? G. A. will tell me that link, how many times you clicked on it, and how long you spent looking at my blog. Don't let that stop you though! A few people were sent here via Joanna's awesome blog, some through facebook, some through direct links I sent them, but most just through the blogger site. I haven't gotten any comments, really, so it's nice to see readers documented. So far my most distant readers have been from Oregon and Canada.
